Blue Square bookmaker, casino and poker was sold, almost bankrupt, to Betfair in April 2013. The brand has now gone. It was owned by Rank Group Plc but they managed Blue Square abysmally.
In the course of the sale both firms acted with dishonesty towards thousands of their business partners. It used to operate under
betting licenses from the UK and Alderney. Rank purchased Blue Square in 2003 for £65million. After exactly 10 years of incompetent management the business was all but destroyed and given away for a token £5million. That is a £60million loss.
That sort of neglect takes some doing in what has been a booming and burgeoning industry during that time. Rank have some questions to answer to their shareholders.

Blue Square Bookmaker started with five staff members in 1999. They weren't the first or even the second UK online bookmaker, but they were in at the ground floor and they were not a bricks and mortar established firm. Like all the early entrants they were new start-ups, though never up-starts.
Fast forward four years and the company and employee level had grown substantially by playing fair, being square and staying honest, even if they were a bit quick in those days to reduce a winning punter's ability to place a half decent bet.
So in 2003, being an independent internet bookie, they were a natural target for a bigger firm like Rank Plc, who were looking for an entry into the lucrative online gambling market and a squeaky clean target.
Rank already owned high street bingo outlets and some casinos. It was a natural fit. They coughed up sixty five million pounds for a company with a little over 100,000 clients. However when they purchased BS they made it the heart of where they wanted their business to be, on the web.
By April 2013 Blue Square Bookmaker had been shattered by incompetent management and Rank had all but destroyed a company that failed in what has been one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. The brand was sold to Betfair for a paltry five million pounds. Rank managed to post a sixty million loss in a business so easy to run it is inconceivable that anyone could fail, but fail Rank did.
As part of the handover to Betfair, both companies conspired to con numerous business partners out of contracts that had been signed and agreed in good faith. If only it could be said that it was good while it lasted, but it is a tale of abject failure by Rank to capitalise on a booming industry. The brand has now gone forever. RIP Blue Square Bookmaker, you deserved better.
