Premiership preview

With just three fixtures left for the majority of Premiership teams and the title seemingly wrapped up, we turn our attention towards the relegation battle and Sunday’s main TV match.

Newcastle v Palace
Although Newcastle have suffered recent defeats to Norwich and Man Utd, both performances have given cause for optimism. I think they were a little unlucky not to come away from Old Trafford with a point, despite fielding an under-strength side. With home advantage they should have too much quality for Palace, who despite an impressive win at home to Liverpool, continue to struggle on the road. The Eagles haven’t won away since October and I think their defence will find it difficult to contain Shearer. We’ve priced the Magpies up as favourites to win by a margin of 0.6 to 0.8 goals and I think they’ll get all three points fairly comfortably, leaving Palace fans biting their nails for another week.

Southampton v Norwich
The home side will almost certainly go down if they lose this one. With the Saints confidence at rock bottom after the heavy defeat at Portsmouth, I think we should expect a tense and scrappy game. We could see a few goals however, as Southampton have conceded 14 in their last 5, whilst the visitors have scored 8 in their last 4 games. Norwich are in-form after going 5 matches unbeaten, however they haven’t won away from home all season. Safri has added some much needed steel to their midfield though, and they now look capable of grinding out results. The return of Peter Crouch will be a big boost for Harry Redknapp’s side, and as an attacking force they should be good enough to get at least a point from this game.

Charlton v Man Utd
Another good season for Charlton has been spoilt somewhat by their customary end of season form. The Addicks haven’t won in their last six matches, and their performances have got progressively worse since the home victory against Spurs in March. However, they should still finish in the top half of the table and that’s a great effort. United’s recent form has been very erratic. We’ve seen some impressive displays mixed in with shock defeats to Norwich and Everton, and it’s difficult to know which United will turn up on Sunday. The visitors will obviously be favourites and are priced up to win by 0.8 to 1.0 goals, but with one eye on the FA Cup Final and Scholes still out, I fancy Charlton to nick a point.
