A shrewd ploy by Switzerland means that country is the current joint-favourites with VCbet to land the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest that is hosted by Kiev on the 21st of May.

That is the view of VCbet's top odds compiler Paul Moody. He maintains that Switzerland’s clever move to enlist the Estonian pop group Vanilla Ninja as Switzerland's representative will give the Swiss crucial votes from the judges of Eastern European countries.

”The Eurovision Song Contest attracts infamously political voting and Switzerland could have pulled off a clever master-stroke.

”It’s a shrewd ploy to get Estonian group Vanilla Ninja to perform their tune, Cool Vibes.

"This should enable the Swiss to get vital votes from the Eastern European countries. That is vital if you want to win nowadays and so Switzerland are joint-favourites in my book.” Norway share pole position with Switzerland at 11/2 favourites for the Eurovision Song Contest.

”Norway are famed for receiving nil points and Norway have enlisted the glam rock band Wig Wam and they might just deliver Norway victory.

”For a country outside Eastern Europe to win the song will have to be superb but I can see them putting in a strong challenge with their ditty In My Dreams.

”It is unique and may possibly put many others in the shade when it is done live. It could stand Norway in good stead come the final. There is nothing similar to this song in the contest.

Moody believes that the songs of Lithuania, Belarus, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro and Croatia are all in with a shout.

”They are assured of getting votes from their neighbours and all have good chances in a year which is higher in quality than historically.

The United Kingdom hope entry, Touch My Fire, performed by Javine was supported in the betting early on at 33-1.

"There’s plenty more room to lay Javine and I think it will be doing well to make the top ten, while I think that 50/1 Ireland might even struggle to qualify with their below-par song Love.

Moody reports that Greece were heavily punted when the prices came out.

”Helena Paparizou’s You’re Number One has seen such an avalanche of money that the Greeks have been slashed from an opening 12/1 down to 13/2.

”The Greek song represents a huge loser in our book already.”

Despite such strong investment in the Greeks, Moody says he’s not too concerned at this stage.

“Greece don’t have to compete in the qualifying round of the Eurovision Song Contest this year but I reckon that competing in the qualifier is a help in this contest.

"Although a good effort from Helena is certain, I do not view this as being as good as last year’s third place entry. It may make the top half dozen but VCbet will continue to take the euros on it as I can not see it winning.”

Hungary, who have been backed from 25/1 down to 16/1, obviously have their fans.

”Hungary’s effort is very similar to last year’s Ukrainian song, without being as good,” Moody said. “Malta, Latvia, Netherlands and Estonia are also attracting each-way money.”
