The Open Championship at St Andrews: Golf
betting preview
The two most recent
Open Golf Championships at St Andrews have produced a couple of 750/1 long
shots (Ben Curtis
& Todd Hamilton) but the pundits reckon there will be no shocks this time.
Historically the winner has typically been a huge
star. Winners include Jack Nicklaus, Severiano
Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, John Daly and, of course, Tiger Woods. This year
could also go the way of a big name.
VCbet have reported heavy
support for Woods (11/4), Davis Love (28/1), Garcia (20/1) and Adam Scott
at 33/1 in their Open Golf betting. However we are going to take on all
these worthy players with a player who is slightly out of favour with
punters and that is Phil Mickleson (18/1 at
VCbet).
He has a game made for this links course and he can
produce the goods at the highest level. 18/1 looks an outstanding value golf bet.
One of Mickelson’s biggest problems has been his
accuracy off the tee but at St Andrews there is plenty of space.
The winner will putt and scramble the
best. There aren’t many better at that than Mickelson. Remember, he was
the 2004 Augusta champion.
Another short game wizard but at massive betting odds
with
VCbet
is 80-1 outsider Olazabal. He can give a good account of himself and appeals as
cracking each-way betting value.
Luke Donald has a big fan base but his game is not
suited to a links course. He has failed to make a single Open cut. Take him
on. If you find
7/2 or bigger about
Donald missing the cut then have a wager.
