Atlanta United vs Philadelphia Union MLS Game Preview & Betting Tips: Cry Wolff

Tyler WolffAway team Philadelphia Union aim to take another step in the right direction in the MLS by beating an Atlanta United FC side that needs to bounce back after a disastrous defeat last time (9pm BST; 4pm ET Sunday). Can the hosts improve now back at Mercedes-Benz Stadium? Or will the visitors prolong their run without a win? Read on for our MLS game preview with betting tips.

Things were going well for Atlanta, aka the Five Stripes, or so it seemed, but one little defeat and form that looked relatively solid, now starts to look slightly weak. They have gone from being unbeaten in seven games to winning just one of their last seven, and they are now without a win in two. Suddenly, things do not look so sweet for the boys from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Fortunately, they are not easy to beat on home soil, so Gonzalo Pineda’s men will likely still fancy their chances ahead of this clash.

For Philly, things have gone quite well of late. They are sitting nicely in fourth spot in the Eastern Conference, while they come here having won last time out. They also avoided defeat last time out on the road, while they have now lost just one of their last nine MLS games. Such a run of form is impressive and will likely leave Sunday’s visitors feeling confident. What will also add to the confidence of Jim Curtin’s men is the fact that they have not lost against Atlanta United in four competitive games.

Goals going in at both ends of the field

Atlanta Utd, Sunday’s hosts, have been far from easy to beat at home this season, as their record of just one home defeat in the league shows, However, they have not exactly been blowing teams away, and the reason for that is a lack of defensive security. The Five Stripes just cannot seem to keep clean sheets at home, which is a big problem, especially ahead of a game against one of the highest scoring teams in the division.

Listen, Pineda’s men score goals, make no mistake about that. They showcased their offensive skills when slotting four against the Rapids at this venue back in late May, while they have since shifted through those offensive gears by scoring two or more at home against the likes of the New England Revolution, D.C. United and New York City. They can hurt teams, that is not up for debate. What is up for serious debate is their ability to keep teams out. In their last four at home, they have shipped six goals, while they have kept just one clean sheet in their last seven home games in all competitions.

Visitors Philly in a similar boat

Fortunately for the hosts, the Union seem to favour a high-scoring, less-than-sturdy-at-the-back approach on their travels. They too have found it very hard to shut teams out, while they know how to stick the ball in the net.

Away from the comforts of home, the Union have scored no shortage of goals of late, notching two or more in four of their last five in all competitions, while they have only failed to score away from home in the league on two occasions this term. Curtin’s men are in fact the second-highest away scorers in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, they have not been so good at the other end, conceding in each of their last four away matches, while they have conceded two or more in five out of nine on the road.

Philadelphia Union on top in recent times

Over the last couple of seasons, the Philadelphia Union have dominated this fixture, losing none of the last four renewals. They have won two of their last three against Atlanta United, conceding just one goal in the process. They are also unbeaten at Mercedes-Benz Stadium competitively since 2019, twice drawing in the league and once winning in the CONCACAF Champions League at this venue.

Goals on the cards

Whichever way we look at this one, it is hard to avoid a bet that favours goals turning up. At odds of 7/4 with BetVictor, ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ is worth a go. Both teams have floundered defensively, as we know, but we are talking about the two highest scoring teams in the division.

What this pair also have between them is two high-quality, regular goal-getters. Julian Carranza has been in fine form for Philly, scoring ten times this season, while ex-Celtic forward Georgios Giakoumakis has been scoring with regularity too. He also has ten goals to his name this season. With both of those on the pitch, and with both teams likely to create, even odds of 7/4 look slightly generous.

After all, the pair have both been involved in some high-scoring games of late. Atlanta’s last three results read: 4-0, 2-2, 3-1, while their recent results at home stand at: 2-2, 3-1, 3-3, 4-0 and 1-3. Philly come here off the back of a 4-1 win and a 2-2 tie. We also should not forget that the pair tied 2-2 at this venue back in late 2021.

It is also worth noting that no team has been involved in more games containing four or more goals than Atlanta United in Major League Soccer this season.

Visitors to worry about Wolff

Atlanta United youngster Tyler Wolff has started to break through of late and it would be no surprise if he sticks around having started the last two games. Having first made an impression in the US Open Cup, scoring against Memphis, Pineda has started to trust the 20-year-old with first team appearances in MLS, and that faith has been repaid with four goals in eight appearances.

Wolff started the last home game and scored, while he’s already averaging an impressive 2.2 shots per game, as well as a whopping 0.74 xG per 90 minutes. If he gets the nod, the energetic youngster, who clearly has an eye for goal, rates a decent bet to score against a visiting backline that certainly isn’t secure. So these are the betting tips, at best odds available, for this ATLUTD vs Philly MLS match preview:

  • Over 3.5 Goals @ 7/4 with BetVictor.
  • Tyler Wolff to score at any time @ 15/4 with Bet365.
