The tipsters are expecting big things from Manchester United this season after a summer of spending that has seen Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane added to the squad. In contrast, Southampton are a popular bet for EPL relegation after losing their key striker Danny Ings.
Those early expectations have been backed up by results from the opening weekend. United returned the most impressive performance in the Premier League as they eased past Leeds United by five goals to one. They have shortened in the odds to 6/1 to win the Premier League title. The Saints went down 3-1 at Everton after taking a first half lead.
The result may look straightforward enough but there should be some good value in the side markets for this one, even if the favourites claim the three points.
So we’ll kick on with this Saints vs Man Utd preview (2pm Sunday; TV: Live on Sky Sports) and culminate with our betting tips for this match.
There are no surprises in the pre-match markets with United going in as hot favourites at best industry odds of 13/20.
The draw is next up at a general 3/1 with the UK online bookmakers, while victory for Southampton is slightly further back at 4/1.
It’s a little too early to fully assess the form guide although last week’s respective results surprised no-one. MUFC are in the ascendancy while SaintsFC are waiting to get off the mark and, while there can always be an upset, there are no shocks in this market.
There are two joint favourites at the top of the first goalscorer market with both Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes listed at best odds of 4/1. Cavani has been cleared to rejoin training after a delayed return from Uruguay but he is not certain to start at this stage so it’s wise to check the team sheets.
Fernandes seems certain to make the starting XI and will be a popular choice following his hat trick against Leeds last weekend.
For Southampton, the player with the shortest price is Adam Armstrong who is listed at a best of 9/1. Having signed from Blackburn Rovers in the summer, Armstrong is expected to fill the gap left by Danny Ings and he began with a goal on his debut in the defeat to Everton.
In terms of best options from midfield, Jadon Sancho is expected to feature in this game although he may start on the bench. The winger is available at a general 6/1 to open the scoring or at a best of 9/4 to find the net in 90 minutes.
In other side bets, Both Teams to Score is quoted at 4/6 with most outlets and that’s a little shorter than we’d been hoping for. Manchester United may not have the meanest defence in the league but, considering the gap in the match betting, BTTS could have been closer to even money.
Moving swiftly on to the Total Goals options, best odds of 13/17 are currently in place to stake Over the 2.5 line. United scored five on their own last time out so we could certainly look to push that a little higher with Over 3.5 attracting an average of 7/4.
I like to round off with some Correct Score suggestions. Obviously this is a more volatile market but a smaller wager can yield some high returns when it lands. Our preference would be for a 3-1 away win and this comes in at best odds of 13/1.
If you feel that Southampton may be tougher to beat than the markets suggest, a 2-2 draw could be the way to go at a top price of 17/1.
Our Preview’s SaintsFC vs MUFC Betting Tips Verdict
While the opening games involving these two sides met with expectations, early season matches can still be tough to predict. Manchester United have offered some false hope to their supporters in the past and the Red Devils must be consistent if they are to stay at the top of the table.
There is some hope of a draw but the loss of Danny Ings is a real blow to Southampton. A regular scorer in a mid-table side is hard to find and his replacement, Adam Armstrong, is under serious pressure.
The one concern for Man Utd fans is the late arrivals of their new signings. Jadon Sancho is believed to be close to full fitness but may just make the bench while Raphael Varane is unlikely to be included.
However, based on the demolition job taken out on Leeds United last Saturday, it’s difficult to see past Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men here. If the odds on the away win don’t look exciting enough, consider the side markets. Bruno Fernandes to open the scoring in a game that exceeds 3.5 goals should provide a good return.
So these are the betting tips for this Southampton vs Man Utd preview:
- Over 3.5 goals @ 15/8 with BetVictor or Betfair.
- Bruno Fernandes to score the first goal @ 4/1 with Paddy Power or Betfair.
