Sun Chariot Stakes Preview & Betting Tips

Murtagh: Sun Chariot PreviewThe 1m Sun Chariot Stakes is the only Group 1 race in the UK on Saturday and it looks like a cracking affair, with a competitive 12-runner line-up including two Irish raiders (2.45pm Newmarket).

So read on for JustBookies’ Sun Chariot Stakes preview, culminating with a value betting tip in this showpiece race for mares and fillies.

Former top jockey Johnny Murtagh is scaling the heights as a trainer with his flag-bearer Champers Elysees, who has won all her four starts this season. The key form race is her latest start when the now Japanese-owned filly won the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown last month. The margin of victory over the runner-up, Peaceful, was one and a quarter lengths. The two Irish challengers run off the same terms here which means Champers Elysees has something in hand. In a truly run race, Champers Elysees should have the measure of Peaceful. The projected going is soft and it was good for the Matron Stakes but neither horse is ground dependent and both have won on soft going.

Peaceful’s run behind Champers Elysees represented good form but there is no obvious reason why it can be reversed in the Sun Chariot Stakes. There is no weight pull in favour of Peaceful who needs to improve by a few pounds to win. Trainer Aidan O’Brien’s contender does have Classic-winning form, having won the Irish 1,000 Guineas in June. The runner-up was Fancy Blue who then was too good for Peaceful in the Prix De Diane (French Oaks) at Chantilly in July. Both Champers Elysees and Peaceful have progressed during their three-year-old seasons but the former has a slight form edge.

Terebellum is the shortest priced runner of the older horses but the 3lb deficit is manageable. Strictly on the official ratings, John Gosden’s Terebellum has produced the better overall form and improved on her most recent start. Finishing two necks behind the winner, Nazeef, and runner-up, Billesdon Brook, in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket is the standout form for this race. Terebellum looked all over the winner and was only overhauled well inside the final furlong. The other two horses produced a bit more at the end of the race and Terebellum has the profile to reverse the form.

Nazeef narrowly beat Billesdon Brook and Terebellum in that Group 1 race at Newmarket. However, there was so little between the three horses at the end of the race that any evidence about their relative ability is inconclusive. Nazeef finished three lengths behind Fancy Blue in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood at the end of July. However, the winner had a 9lb weight advantage which puts Nazeef ahead of Peaceful on collateral form. The form also suggests Champers Elysees and Nazeef are closely matched but Nazeef can be backed at almost twice the price and could be an each-way bet to nothing.

Billesdon Brook won the 1,000 Guineas in 2018, so is the only English Classic winner in the field. There was a dip in form during the rest of her three-year-old season and during the following campaign. Billesdon Brook has been consistent in five starts this season. The mare went down by three quarters of a length to Nazeef on the All-Weather at Kempton in June carrying 5lb more than the winner and that gives Richard Hannon’s charge a good chance.

Veracious is aged five so gives 3lb to four runners, notably including Champers Elysees and Peaceful. This is a second outing since wind surgery that can sometimes lead to improved form. In this case Veracious has produced an official rating of 113 in all three races this season. The mare was second in the corresponding race in 2019, finishing one and a half lengths behind Billesdon Brook. There is no weight differential so Veracious will have to show some improvement to finish ahead of Billesdon Brook and the rest of the field.

Our Preview’s Sun Chariot Stakes Betting Tips Verdict

Champers Elysees has produced better form than Peaceful and should get the better of that rival again. Nazeef only beat Billesdon Brook and Terebellum narrowly at Newmarket and any of the three could have prevailed. Billesdon Brook should have the beating of Nazeef this time but still has something to prove against the more fancied runners.

Terebellum is our idea of the form pick and can win the race despite giving weight to Champers Elysees and Peaceful. Veracious carries the same weight but will struggle to beat the selection. So the betting tip for this Sun Chariot preview is:
