Genesis Open Preview, Betting Tips & Best Odds Guide

Jordan Spieth

After a successful punt on Jordan Spieth (pictured) to win the Pebble Beach Pro Am last week, we’re staying on the PGA Tour for our preview as a strong field assembles at the Riviera Country Club in California for the Genesis Open, writes Matt.

As you’d expect, Spieth now leads the bookies’ Genesis Open betting odds for this week’s tournament but the competition is much stiffer, thanks largely to the return of the man heading the FedEx Cup Standings, Hideki Matsuyama.

How The Favourites Stack Up

It was an ominous sight to see Spieth dominate at the Pebble Beach in four rounds that hinted at the form he showed in taking two majors in 2015. The 23 year old has a best of a tied 4th at the Genesis Open and he kicks off the outright winner odds market at an industry best of 8/1 with Bet365.

Jordan Spieth looks primed for a great 2017 but second favourite Dustin Johnson has a much better record at this event with five top four finishes in his previous seven attempts. A third place at Pebble Beach last week suggests that the 2016 US Open Champion offers marginally better value at his best odds of 9/1 with Bet365 and Paddy Power.

You can also get 9/1 on Matsuyama but elsewhere, there is a best price of 10/1 with Coral and SkyBet. After a brief spell, he is back at an event where he has never finished outside of the top 25. That may not look to be the most startling statistic but this is the Fed Ex Cup leader and a man in the form of his life.

Others With A Chance In Genesis Betting

Perhaps the most notable result from last weekend was Jason Day’s top ten finish. Yes, the World Number One blew up just as he caught Spieth on Saturday but we’ve been waiting for a return to form and this could be the time to take a punt.

Day is listed at 16/1 with Coral and BetVictor in the outright winner betting market or 13/8 with Paddy Power for a second consecutive top ten.

Elsewhere, there is a lot of talk around Sergio Garcia who crosses from the European Tour having taken the Dubai Desert Classic in an impressive display at the start of the month. He has three top tens including two tied fourths at the Riviera and is on offer at a best of 25/1 with Paddy Power and William Hill for the win.

Outsiders in Genesis Golf Odds

It’s a mark of Bubba Watson’s form that the two-time winner and defending champion is out at 35/1 with BetFred and BetVictor for the outright win this week. There will be a lot of talk around the left hander, mainly because of that impressive record in the Genesis Open but recent results mean that this preview won’t be backing Watson here.

Instead, I’m considering as a betting tip the more erratic but considerably more threatening Justin Thomas who is at 28/1 with Coral to take the trophy. In stark contrast to Bubba Watson, his record in this event is poor having finished outside of the top 40 in his previous two attempts but he’s been stunning at the start of 2017 and is the first top ten betting tip of the week at 5/2 with Coral.

One player who I will be backing consistently in the top ten markets this year is Brandt Snedeker who delivered again at the weekend at 2/1. Sneds was another to fade after challenging Spieth and he doesn’t feature in the Power Rankings this time around but he will always give you value for money. Snedeker is on offer at an industry best of 40/1 with BetFred for the win or 7/2 with BetVictor for that top ten finish.

Genesis Course, Trends and Betting Tips Conclusion

The Riviera Country Club is relatively long for a par 71 at a shade over 7,300 yards and it features at least two of the most familiar holes in the sport. There’s the par three sixth with its bunker in the middle of the green while the 315 yard 10th is comfortably driveable for the long hitters.

Overall, this is a course that is set up for those power hitters and that is one of the reasons why Bubba has been so strong here in recent years. With form not on the side of the defending champion, I’m coming back to players with similar qualities so this preview’s betting tips are Dustin Johnson for the win at 9/1 with Bet365 while the top ten punts are Snedeker at 7/2 with Stan James and Justin Thomas at 5/2 with Coral.
